Carbon Management Strategy Takes Flight as West Coast Air
Operations now bullfrogpowered
Vancouver, November 4, 2009 - West Coast Air has launched a new business strategy that focuses on first measuring, then reducing its carbon footprint throughout its operations. A component of the strategy is the company’s decision to bullfrogpower™ its operations—including its head office in Vancouver and its terminals in Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and Sechelt—with 100 per cent low-impact renewable electricity.
The decision to choose green electricity from Bullfrog Power is part of West Coast Air’s strategy to reduce its environmental impact through a comprehensive carbon management plan. In implementing the plan, West Coast examined and measured the environmental impacts it made throughout its operations, then set out actions to reduce those impacts. Electricity was one area where potential reductions were feasible and straightforward, but the plan also involves improving efficiency in flight schedules, adopting more efficient lighting, and enhancing recycling and waste management programs, among other actions. Employee engagement and customer education are also key components.
“Aviation is a carbon-intensive industry, but by systematically measuring our impact across the organization, we were able to identify areas for reduction, including renewable alternatives for our electricity,” said Rick Baxter, President and CEO, West Coast Air. “We see this carbon management program as another way of demonstrating industry leadership, but of also finding business efficiencies and cost savings that engage our employees and enhance our bottom line. We hope that other small and mid-sized businesses across B.C. will be challenged to undertake their own carbon management plans.”
The company’s annual electricity usage is estimated at more than 500 MWh per year. Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power will ensure that as much low-impact renewable power is injected into the regional electricity grid as the organization uses. Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada.
“We’re pleased that West Coast Air has chosen to bullfrogpower its business as part of this comprehensive strategy,” said Theresa Howland, Vice President Western Region, Bullfrog Power. “Not only is the organization demonstrating environmental leadership, but it is also helping us raise awareness about the importance of low-impact renewable electricity among B.C. residents and tourists, and supporting the development of new wind power in the province.
